Coral Bay 25th - 28th July

We were looking forward to a few days in a warmer coastal location. The kids were keen to get in the water. We arrived in Coral Bay in the late afternoon. We were given a campsite in a terrible location. It was in the back corner of the a caravan park called People's Park. It was a half days walk to the toilet block (great for visits in the wee hours of the morning). Unfortunately, Coral Bay didn't live up to expectations (we had been given positive comments by several travellers before deciding to stop here). That night it rained, really rained. 25mm (10% of their annual rainfall) fell in a few hours. The next day was mostly overcast with patchy rain. The sun appeared the next day. The bay is naturally beautiful, however unkept and not as pristine as we expected. Every afternoon at about 3.30 there is fish feeding in shin deep water on the beach. And this is serious fish feeding! Small pellets of food is distributed amongst the crowd of "feeders" that gather. A school (a big school) of very large snapper swum around our ankles and gobbled pellets as they were dropped in the water. One little pellet would often create a frenzy as these huge fish fought for the bounty. A brilliant experience and we returned the next day for more fish feeding. We managed to get out onto the reef in a glass bottomed boat. We loved snorkeling out on the reef - brilliantly coloured fish of different sizes and shapes. We purchased two sets of snorkels and goggles for future snorkeling adventures (our next stop was planned to be Cape Range National Park where we had been told snorkeling from the beach was spectacular). After a very hesitant start (she was very reluctant to get in the water off the boat) Imogen quickly fell in love with snorkeling and utilised every opportunity to get in some fish and coral viewing.
